How do I get Outlook e-mail field to display e-mail, not name

My Outlook 2003 displays name in the e-mail field rather than e-mail. How do
I get it to show me the e-mail instead of the name. It shows name even if no
e-mail address for that contact.

How were these Contacts created? It sounds like you might have imported
them. Did you? Did they ever display correctly?

I imported them from Outlook Express. I am a recent convert.
I should point out that they were first imported from Express to Outlook
2000 on my old laptop, then imported from old laptop to new laptop which has
outlook 2003.
Symptom started with Outlook 2000. Displayed logically in Express.

No wonder. Rather an important detail to have left out and make us try to
guess. No solution known. Importing Contacts does not work well. There is a
slim chance that repairing your PST file might work, emphasis on slim. If
not, recreate your Contacts, and never import them again.

This is not a data problem. It is a DISPLAY problem.
In most of the contacts, the e-mail address is in the field, but Outlook
won't display it unless I dig way down into the individual contact.
My guts tell me there should be a preference somewhere to address this.

Nope. You must manually populate your Email Display As field. It was not
created correctly during the import. Sometimes just opening and saving the
Contact will reset it.

I now note that when I add a new contact, the system defaults to putting the
person's name in the e-mail display slot before the e-mail address.
As I said before, this is a display problem, not a data problem.
Is there a way to turn this off at least on the new contacts I enter in the
future?

There is no such setting. You cannot set the default format of the Email
Display As field. That is determined by the Outlook version.
