I can't get Outlook 2007 to recognize my Address Book.
 

My contacts were transferred over from Outlook 2003. I can pull them up as
individual contacts but I can't get them in the Address book in 2007. I've
gone to properties and it won't allow me to turn on the address book
function. It is not available for my contacts. I tried sending my contacts
to myself in Outlook form and then saving the contacts but that didn't work
either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

How did you transfer your data to Outlook 2007?
Have you looked to see if the Outlook Address Book Service has been added to
your profile (Tools Account Settings... Address Book Tab).

I used EZ file Transfer with a cable from an old desktop to my new laptop.
The (ToolsAcount SettingsAddress Book Tab is set to Outlook Address Book)
when I try to add a folder it refers me back to the properties in my contacts
folder to turn on the email address book but that option is not available.
Any suggestions??

This is a known bug that we have reported and have posted here as often as
possible as a warning to others. You cannot use Windows Easy Transfer with
Outlook.
There is only one way you can transfer data from one installation of Outlook
to another: copy your Outlook data file, open it in your new Outlook
profile, then set it as your default and close the new data file Outlook
created.
At this point, you must create a new Outlook profile and use the above
method to transfer your data to it. Once you do, you will be able to
configure your Outlook Address Book.
Migrating data from one installation of Outlook to another has become so
difficult that few can escape the process without injury.

I had read up on it before and I did make a backup of my old outlook but
where do I copy them to. I tried importing them, didn't work. I've got vista
and it won't allow me access to my Documents and settings. Where do I copy
the files to and from?

You need not be concerned over where you place the file. In fact it is
better if you do not try to place it in Outlook's default location. Just put
in a location you'll remember and back up frequently.
Never import an Outlook data file. Use the steps I posted instead. If they
are not clear, post your questions.

I am having a similar problem. Following instructions from MVPs, I "opened"
the .pst file that I had saved from before I reformatted the Hard Drive. That
caused the creation of a NEW "Personal Folders" complete with Deleted items
and Search Folders...which I don't need and clutters the window on the Left.
Additionally, there are now 2 folders called Contacts -- #1: "Contacts" #2:
"Contacts in Personal Folders". The second one has the data I need. However,
it will not come up when I write an email.
I tried the linking that was suggested yesterday in this thread, but the
linking mechanism is looking for a ".PAB" extension and my file has extension
".PST". When I try the alternative, "Add an Outlook Address Book," it tells
me there is none.

Questions:
1. How can I get these addresses to be the default addresses?
2. Can I get rid of that extra Personal Files, or do I have to live with it?
PS, I am on a stand-alone PC.

file, you must then set it as your default. After you restart Outlook, you
can then close the new, empty PST file the new profile created and all your

There is simply no need to add another address book service. The Outlook
Address Book Service is already installed. That's what the message is
telling you.
If you have indeed connected your former PST file correctly (and I can't
tell if you have) just make sure its Contacts Folder has been enabled as an
email address book in its properties.

The file is enabled. What I had to do was un-enable the other folder (the
original empty folder), and that worked to get the email to be able to find
the addresses. I closed Outlook and re-opened as you suggested. The original
"Contacts" folder is still there and is the one htat is highlighted,
indicating it is the default despite being empty. Is there some way to
consolidate the two Contacts folders so that the default is the one wiht the
data?

I didn't designate the old folder as anything. My assumption is that it is
the orginal "Contacts" folder that was created when I installed Outlook. The
reason I suggested that it might be the default is because it is the one that
is highlighted when I first open Outlook. I'd sure like to get it to go away.

In contrast to your assumption, actually, I have been following your
instructions, and describing the results. Email is a difficult way to
communicate sometimes. Is there a way we can get through this to resolve
the problem? I am willing to start over.

I don't understand your post then. Once you designate your old PST file as
the default, you can simply close the first PST file with a R click
Close...
