Why doesn't outlook 2007 search work, showing "invalid entryid"

Outlook 2007 didn't do a very good job of importing my contacts from an older
version. Search never works for contacts. Even though email addresses are
entered in contact fields, they don't work in an email when I click on "to"
then select an address. Why would this be, and how to fix it?

Importing Contacts has never worked and is never the correct way to transfer
data from another installation. All previous data files are perfectly
compatible with Outlook 2007. Just open the file. Don't import it.
