Writing to the status bar

I want to write progress messages to to status bar.

this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/208527

states that it is not possible to change the status bar text on office 2000.

Is this still the case with office 2003 and 2007? I it is possible to change
the text, how do I do it?
