In Word 2003, when I try to mail merge into a letter from Contacts I get this
message when I click on Contacts as data source: "This operation cannot be
completed because of dialog or database...

Right, in day view. But also in month view. And this means two ways: one
with the crosshair cursor, the other with click-drag over the appointment
itself. I think this answers my question...

Sorry, my English is not so good. Are you saying it's not possible to see
Signature when I click Insert? I only use MS Outlook for sending mails and I
have two accounts. For me it's easier to use...
