How do I mass edit the contact list

I need to change one field to another value for a large number of contacts
in my file. Is there any way to do this with a single operation rather than
opening each contact and making the change?

Mail Merge Wizard does not enable Merge button

How do I complete the Mail Merge Wizard?
I opened a contacts file to be mail merged and click on Tools | Mail
Merge... which trundles for awhile to build the temporary data file then
opens the Mail...

The Contacts Pane would just make it more convenient to get addresses than
using the Address book.

The reason for the large number is that I have my church directory on it
plus I run a craft fair...

I just noticed that there is a count of 1396 in the lower left corner when I
open the Address book and highlight the parent folder. Looks like I am
stuck.
