Thanks for your advice.
I have now disabled email scanning with my AVG and this works OK, the
paperclip now only shows if an attachment is included.
I didn't have to reinstall etc. AVG. I found that...

I have XP Home SP2 with Outlook Express. Emails I send only show a
paperclip in my window if I have sent an attachment with it. However emails
I receive show the paperclip all the time regardless...
