Thank you all for your answers.
The problem has been solved--more later.

Firstly appologies for some "duff" info I gave out in my first message. When
I said that my other PCs' sent the mail OK...

Answer #1. No--the server does not require authentication. Some of the other
accounts I used for test did but the result was the same. I can also Telnet
this...
