Reformatting hard drive and want to save messages

I need to reformat my hard drive and want to save my outlook messages to an
external drive somehow so I can get them back afterwards. I can't figure out
from the help how to do this, and any...

Compacting did the trick on the sending issue, thanks.

Any idea on what's causing the error message window to be blank?
