Counts for Mail Folders
There are two ways. First, the Status bar (down on the bottom of the Outlook
window) should always list the number of items in the folder. If you don't
see the status bar, select View, Status...

Are you sure it's not in the recycle bin? Contacts can be notoriously hard
to find in the Deleted Items folder because of the modification/creation

Do not delete email from server not working
Gmail operates a bit differently than other servers. You need to go into
your gmail settings (actually from gmail, not from Outlook) and configure
the behavior there.

winmail.dat
This can be avoided by changing your mail format from Rich Text to Plain
Text or HTML. Go to Tools, Options, Mail Format.
Some mail clients can't understand Rich Text emails.
