Default change recurring task going forward, but keep all past occurances

When I delete a recurring appointment from my calendar (MS Outlook 2003), it
deletes all of the past occurances as well as the future ones. I would like
to have the option of retaining the past appointments as a record of my time
spent. Is there a way to set this option?
