Default Updating meetings

Why is it that when I send an update to recurring appointments, it sends a
cancellation notice to all attendees and deletes all future appointments off
their calendars? I tried to upate a meeting location, and it cancelled all
of the future meetings so that the attendees were contacting me to see why
they had all been cancelled. What is the proper way to handle changes like
this?
