Default Unable to mark appointments private after accepting them

1)outlook 2003

2)I have a user who has already accepted several appointment and would like
to make some of them private.

3) Problem is that when she goes into the appointment the private checkbox
is greyed out

what could cause this problem?
any help is appreciated
