Default Calendar appearing with a number in brackets behind it

Under My Calendars, my general Calendar is showing a number in brackets
behind the word 'Calendar'. It looks just like it does in the Inbox when you
have a new email. Example: Calendar (1) Does anyone know why this appears?
Do I have a meeting request pending? Or can anyone help me get the number to
go away?

Thank you for your help!

It would have been nice to post the answer - unread items - it is a usenet
courtesy to those who also may have the same problem.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact.

Couldn't have been the unread items count or it would have been in
parentheses, not brackets. It must have been the total count that was
selected.

That depends on where you are in the world.

Americans tend to differentiate between parenthesis and brackets, the
British call them all brackets, defining the type as round brackets,
curly brackets etc. So the OP may have meant parentheses. I do not
know what our antipodean friends do in this case.
