It would be nice to have appointment reminders delivered to a desktop gadget
that has mouse-over details to keep the gadget size down.

You may minimize the Reminders window.

For vista's sidebar? I think there are some, but they keep outlook open.
Better is to minimize outlook to the tray and use the reminder window.
