Default Is this an Outlook normal behaviour and Why?

A user running Outlook 2007 sp1 with mailbox in Exchange 2003 sp2 reported
that he had sent a meeting invite to an email alias. When the alias members
replies arrived, he went to the tracking tab of the meeting to tally the
replies. He noticed that the users who have replied to his meeting request
showed as 'optional attendee'. I was able to reproduced the same behavior
using two different aliases. User wants to know the why of this behavior. I
researched MS but didn't find anything about this petty nuisance. Hope that
somebody can explain this behavior.
