Default News Appointments not working

I ahve to leave my office pc on permanently to allow access from home using
VNC. Afetr a few days I am unable to create a new appointment (the pop up
window does not appear) and existing ones do not pop up.
The only solution is to restart my office desktop pc which is obviously not
possible when I am at home. This problem applies whether working at desktop
or laptop.
