After re-installing XP, I restored my dbx files yet Outlook Express still
wants to download over 30,000 of messages which I would already have. How
can I prevent this?

Did you do a complete clone backup or did you just import the dbx files?
http://www.insideoe.com/backup/

You can try replacing the newsgroup dbx files with the old dbx files, but
this doesn't always work.

If you want to download newsgroups, but don't want hundreds, or thousands,
of messages, you can create a message rule such as this:

ToolsMessage RulesNews.

Box 1: Where the message was sent more than days ago
Box 2: Delete it & Stop processing more rules
Box 3: Click on "Days" and choose the # of days you want.
Name the rule.

In ToolsOptionsRead - Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. When you go to,
or subscribe to a newsgroup, it will only download the messages for the
number of days you selected.

I'm not sure what you are meaning here - I already have downloaded the
headers at least (that's what's already in the dbx file). I need to prevent
then downloading a second time.

You cannot "restore" old DBX newsgroup files and expect them to be
recognized by Outlook Express. Newsgroup subscriptions and the associated
DBX files for them are keyed to specific identities and those that are
readable in one identity are not readable in another identity unless you
have "cloned" your system as outlined at this website:
http://www.insideoe.com/backup/bu_full.htm

Copy/paste of old DBX files from one system to another will not work for
newsgroups. Sorry, but you wasted your time doing so.

Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped.
Thanks.

The backup procedure includes the dbx files. So it looks like the 4 registry
items needs to be imported also so that OE knows where it is up to.

That's correct, but trying to do it "after the fact" may result in some
unintended errors. I'd be very cautious, if I were you or you may make your
situation worse.

Consider creating a clone of your old system in a new identity and then move
the old stored files into the message store folder for that identity and you
should be able to have it all. But remember, if it's been awhile since you
connected to those newsgroups, all messages that have been deleted from the
server in the interim, will also be deleted from your local copy DBX file
when you next connect to that newsgroup.
