I am having a problem getting the message size to display properly when
connecting to certain usenet servers. The operation is acceptable in all other aspects. news:news.cadsoft.de (free access) group 'eagle.suggest.eng' (for example) is reading initially with message size of zero until the message is opened. Then the size updates to a correct number. news:news.teranews.com (needs name and password) group 'alt.binaries.schematics.electronic' (for example) seems to read message size only as the main article, not including the size of any attachments (reads 1K even for a message with a 50K attachment). news:news.microsoft.com group 'microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlook express' does read message size properly. XP Pro SP2. Is there anything I can do locally to resolve this issue? Tech service at Teranews claims that they are able to correctly read the message size. Thank You, Oppie |

Go to View | Columns and choose Lines. That is a better estimate of size
than the Size field. steve "Oppie" wrote in message ... I am having a problem getting the message size to display properly when connecting to certain usenet servers. Thank You, Oppie I'll start with I have no idea... Does the message size correct itself after you've downloaded the message? In other words - if it looked like it was 1kb and it turned out to be 52kb then after you have highlighted the message and it has downloaded does it then appear to be a full 52kb in the size field? I figure that might help someone else debug it because I don't recall actually seeing that before? -- Galen - MS MVP - Windows (Shell/User & IE) http://dts-l.org/ http://kgiii.info/ "At present I am, as you know, fairly busy, but I propose to devote my declining years to the composition of a textbook which shall focus the whole art of detection into one volume." - Sherlock Holmes |

Steve, Yes, Changing from the size (which appears to be computed) to lines (which is embedded in the header directly) gives me back the functionality I needed. Good quick fix - thanks Galen, The only server that I saw the size go from zero to a valid size was on cadsoft.de On Teranews (which I subscribe to since my office ISP does not support usenet) this is my primary usenet server and is not supporting correct message size since a 'server upgrade' last year. We have been a polite finger pointing mode for a while now. Thanks all, Oppie |

I would like to see if the message size discrepancy with teranews can still be fixed. Until then, I'm going to use message lines as an indicator of message size. TIA - Oppie |

Until then, I'm going to use message lines as an indicator of message size. TIA - Oppie That'd be better directed towards Steve. My understanding is that it's a calculation of the message itself and any attachments but that's just, well, wrong... I'm guessing there is far more to it as it may even be telling you the size it will take on disk for instance. If you've ever been bored (it happens to me a lot so I'm guessing you might have been as well) you'll find emails with a 12k attachment, a few k of text, and a dozen lines of headers and OE will claim it's 35 kb in size. So, how it reaches that figure is beyond me. I don't know what server software is being used by the NNTP server you speak of but it could be a bug involved in that easily enough. I did a quick check on LocalNet's NNTP service and SpamCop's and didn't find any differences. The sizes show up (with the size column) here without any problems and appears to be generally correct.
