I have read many postings, regarding other persons' difficulties in changing
their sound notification for new mail. I seem to have a unique problem, however. My Dell laptop only gives me a "balloon pop" noise, when new mail arrives in my Outlook Express 6 account. I have repeatedly tried to go into the Control Panel/Sounds section, to change my notification sound to something louder or "better" (such as a "tada" or a "Microsoft Notify" sound). However, no matter what I do, the balloon pop still remains the notification sound. It is extremely frustrating. All of the other sounds (such as Start Up, Recycle Bin, etc.) are normal -- it's just the New Mail Notification that I am unable to correct. Does anyone have any ideas??? Thanks in advance! -- Mr. Aloha |

Hi Mister-Aloha,
This should be an easy thing to do. You might try using another sound file or copying a Windows sound file to another folder might help. There are new mail (*wav) files at the site linked below. It would be possible to search the Web (new mail sounds - etc.) for other files. http://www.ilovewavs.com/Events/GotMail/GotMail.htm -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "Mister-Aloha" wrote in message ... You are changing the "new mail notification" sound aren't you?
If that won't work, you might consider OETune. www.oehelp.com/OETune/ steve "Mister-Aloha" wrote in message ... Hi, Mr. Kuay Tim:
Thanks for the suggestion. I did, indeed, go to that website you provided me, and I downloaded a few of the notification sounds onto my desktop. I then retrieved them from the desktop, and inserted them into the Control Panel/Sounds, under "New Mail Notification." Unfortunately, I STILL AM GETTING THE BALLOON-POP!! I have no idea why the computer fails to pick up any new sound that I put into the "New Mail Notification." I guess there is some internal problem in my Dell loptop that prevents any other sound from being made, when Outlook Express receives mail. This is EXTREMELY frustrating for me, since the balloon-pop is fairly quiet, and I often miss hearing new mail arriving. Any other ideas/recomendations? -- Mr. Aloha "Kuay Tim" wrote: Hi Mister-Aloha, This should be an easy thing to do. Hi Mr. Aloha,
I don't know the reason the sound is not being played, but there are various Microsoft KB articles on the topic. This suggests many others have had a like experience. You might check the path to the sound file in the Registry, as outlined in the article linked below. I would suggest using a sound file saved in a My Documents folder, not the desktop. Let us know what you find (in the Registry). Although the MS KB article is for OE4 the Registry entry is the same for Win XP using OE6. The path can be entered after double-clicking on "Default" in the right pane when you get to the end of the Registry path given in the article. Let us know what you find. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/190304/en-us From the Article 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type Regedit, and then click OK. 3. Navigate to the following key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Defa ult\MailBeep\.current 4. Click .current. In the Right pane click (Default) to open the Value Data edit window. 5. Type the path and file name of the .wav file you wish to use as your mail notification sound. 6. Exit the Registry and restart the computer. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "Mister-Aloha" wrote in message ... Hi, Mr. Kuay Tim: Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks again, Tim, for trying to help me. I did go to the Registry Edit, and
followed the exact directions shown in the OLEXP reference you provided me. Amazingly, I STILL get the balloon-pop, after making all the changes/modifications indicated in the OLEXP. I simply cannot change the sound notification to anything, other than the balloon noise. I guess there is some internal defect in my Dell laptop. But I appreciate your trying to assist me. Hi Mr. Aloha,
I don't know what the reason is for the issue. Did the Registry have the path to the balloon pop sound? As a workaround you could try substituting another sound file for the balloon pop file. Find and rename the balloon pop file, then move another sound you'd like to use and rename it to match the original balloon pop name. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "Mister-Aloha" wrote in message ...
