I'm getting an increasing number of Mail Undeliverable messages claiming to
have been sent by me which I haven't sent. Is this caused by a virus? Any help appreciated. Stuart Reed |

Yes and No.
Yes you could have a virus that is sending out mail. Update your antivirus program and run a detailed scan. Also run antispyware, several programs should be run to double check. No, it could be someone is spoofing your address on spam and hence you get the bounce back. Or it could someone with your address in their address book has a virus that is sending out spam with your address on the return. In either of these cases, there is nothing you can do about it. Just delete the bounced mail and if it continues, contact your ISP for a new address. "Stuart Reed" wrote in message ... This is coming from a virus infected computer that is using your address to
spoof the From field. It's very common. As of now, all you can do is delete them. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Stuart Reed" wrote in message ... Stuart Reed There has been a sudden increase in this nuisance reported from Wanadoo/Freeserve customers in the last few days, so you're not alone. It is recommended that you do *not* use your actual e-mail address when posting to newsgroups as this is a source from which your details can be collected for spam purposes. The e-mail address in your header looks very genuine! In OE, use Tools Accounts Double-click on your News account and "munge" (disguise) your e-mail address. You can see an explanation and suggested examples here (and many other sources!): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Address_munging |

Those can be one of 4 things:
1) Some spammer is sending the original messages and using your e-mail address as the sender. 2) Someone else has a PC infected with a virus and the virus is sending itself as the original message and using your e-mail address as the sender. 3) The message is the virus itself, pretending to be a returned mail. 4) Your PC is infected with a virus and it has been sending itself. And this is really a returned mail that your PC sent. In cases 1, 2, and 3 above, the messages are not coming from your PC and are not going through your e-mail account. There's nothing you can do to prevent anyone from sending an e-mail with your e-mail address as the From header, just as you can't prevent anyone from sending a postal mail and putting your name and address as the return address. At this point all you can do is filter out the messages. Your ISP may offer some filtering at the mail server. To make sure that case 4 above is not the cause, you should check your PC with an updated anti-virus program. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Stuart Reed" wrote in message ...
