Hi,
On some newsgroups - maybe even here, when you reply to a post, many prefer that you "bottom" post. How do I set that up (meaning the signature and my comments come at the bottom of the original post) for newsgroups but not for e-mail? -- From the sea to the sky and back to the sea they go, Jeffrey Cayce, South Carolina, USA (33.94°N, 81.07°W); 207 ft http://www.midlandstech.edu/jlh/ "The only thing that separates South Carolina from hell is a screen door." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "If ye love wealth better than liberty ... servitude better than ... freedom, go home from us in peace. I want to take this opportunity to put in a strong vote *not* to bottom post! If everyone
would edit down the preceding 2,000 words of conversation, it might be a good idea. But they don't. Even JLH, who is a great and thoughtful guy. Consequently one has to scroll through reams of repeated drivel to read the new contribution. rs "JLH" wrote in message ... : Jim Pickering wrote: : 1. Quit Outlook Express. : 2. As for bottom posting, scanning through a post is a tap of the space bar, for me. The problem is, NNTP posts are not one-on-one messages, and people who follow a score, or more, of threads, or whose NNTP server lacks retention, or whose reader is configured for short time to purge, they can wind up coming into a thread with no context, or worse, with top posting. Actually, best to follow the convention of the group. Top posting works for business correspondence in email. Bottom posting was developed for posting results, and discussions of results, in R&D. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

![]() scanning through a post is a tap of the space bar, for me. Whoa. Just tried it. One screen at a time, just like clicking on the little arrow. After you get to the end of the post you drop down to the next post. I was encouraged to test out other keystrokes: END and HOME go to bottom and top; SHIFT-SPACE goes up one page and, if you hang on to the SHIFT, reverts to going down. Any other good moves? rs |

I don't know about MSOE because I use 40tude Dialog for news. In Dialog, 'H' will toggle the full header display, 'P' will bring up the compose window for a new post, and 'F' will bring up a compose window to "Follow up" to an existing post. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

... scanning through a post is a tap of the space bar, for me. provided people aren't top posting without trimming. w Then you need to have ways to skip all the old stuff. That means that you have focus in the Preview pane. (Pressing End with focus in the Preview pane is one of the "ways to skip all the old stuff".) However, you don't need to have focus in the Preview pane to use the Spacebar to scroll the Preview pane. Just be aware of where focus is; otherwise you will find yourself pressing those other scroll keys and finding them acting on the message list instead of on the Preview pane of the message you were reading. Any other good moves? One that I use a lot is Shift-F3 Space, Alt-s That means I can then use F3 instead of Ctrl- for advancing to the next post regardless of whether the Message list or the Preview pane has focus. Also significant, it gives both hands something to do while reading threads. BTW I consider it a usability defect that there are no toolbar buttons equivalent to Next and Previous, as there are in the Message window. F3 (for space in message) is only a workaround for that missing functionality and only provides half of it. HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- |

Well, I appreciate the advice anyway. But perhaps in the future you could mention that you
are referring to a different program. Since this is an OE forum I sort of assumed you were referring to OE. rs |
