Many have reported missing or empty Address Books. For many, this was
caused by the update KB911567 introduced on 4/11/06. See:

Never misses. A new computer runs fast and operates great. Historically
I have found with each "update" the computer slows down and troubles
starts.

I have turned automatic updates off.

I would suggest setting it to notify, but not download. I always have mine
set that way.

My production machine is set to notify. The others, including this one (my
travel machine) are set to automatic. This one has both of the recent
"problem" patches but doesn't have a problem.
