I had a "saved" folder under local folders that disappeared but I know I did
not delete it. I have been trying to retrieve a similar file from the "stored" area. Any idea what caused this and how I can get it back. I managed to locate a similar file name from the "stored" location but I have no idea how it got there and I am having some difficulty in having OLE import it. |

Single folders do not import. Use this workaround.
In Windows Explorer, click on the file and drag it to the Desktop. Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as the one on your desktop. ***Copy a message from any folder to the new one. You MUST do this.*** Close OE. Go back to Windows Explorer and Click Desktop and drag the folder from the Desktop to the OE store folder that you clicked on to reveal the .dbx files. Prompt - "Do you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "grinder" wrote in message ink.net... If any of the local folders have a + in front of them in the Folder
List, click it to see the subfolders. You might find your missing folder there. If so, drag the folder to the "Local Folders" to get it out of being a subfolder. It's very easy to accidentally drag a folder to be a subfolder of another one. I've done that several times. If you click on a folder and move the mouse a little while clicking, that gets treated as a drag and OE will drag the folder into the adjacent one and give you no warning at all. If you aren't looking close, you won't see it disappear. Also, if you select a user created folder and press the Delete key intending to delete the highlighted message there, but the focus is still on the folder, the folder gets deleted. You do get a "are you sure" prompt, but many people have clicked to fast to read it. In that case, you folder becomes a subfolder of the Deleted Items folder. It can be recovered by dragging it out until the Deleted Items folder is emptied either manually or automatically (Tools, Options, Maintenance) -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "grinder" wrote in message ink.net... And? You said what you did, but didn't ask a question. Did it not work?
You dragged the file from the Desktop to the message store. Did you get the Overwrite prompt? Once you dragged it into the Message Store folder it should have any messages in it in the folder you created. Are you sure this is not a Message Store from an old identity and you are not actually dragging it into the Message Store you currently use? Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then StartRunCtrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In Windows XP, 2K & 3K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "grinder" wrote in message ink.net... Bottom line: If the dbx file is 75KB, it is empty. If your original "saved"
folder is not in the current message store, it is gone for good. If it disappeared from your Folder Tree, the dbx file would still be in the Message Store, even if it was accidentally deleted, or dragged to another folder. I have no other explanation. In the future, some general OE advice: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. And backup often. Thanks for your help. I just wish I knew what happened. BTW, today I get
back in and my address book is gone. Luckily I had backed it up. |

Many have reported missing or empty Address Books. For many, this was caused
by the update KB911567 introduced on 4/11/06. See: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#14 -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "grinder" wrote in message nk.net... Thanks for your help. See: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#14 -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ Never misses. A new computer runs fast and operates great. Historically I have found with each "update" the computer slows down and troubles starts. I have turned automatic updates off. |
