Default Leave a copy on a server does not work

I have two separate NTL accounts. For one of them, when selecting this
option in OE6, it works but for the other it does not and I have no idea why
not. In addition I observed that if I send a message ( from my Hotmail
address) to the address from the account where the selection does not work
the message is downloaded to OE Inbox twice! Could anyone please shed some
light on this for me?
Thanks
divoch

Hi divoch,

This behavior can occur when the DBX file (Pop3uidl.dbx) used to track
messages still on the server is damaged. After being renamed or deleted any
messages left on the server will be downloaded again, but behavior will be
normal afterwards.

1. Click Exit on the File menu to quit Outlook Express.

2. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or
Folders.

3. Include hidden files and folders in the search for Win 2000 and
Win XP.

4. In the Search for files or folders named box, type Pop3uidl.dbx,
and then click Search Now.

5. Under Search Results, right-click the Pop3uidl.dbx file, and then
click Rename.

6. Type Pop3uidl.old, and then press ENTER. Or delete the file.

7. Start Outlook Express.

Tried that but unfortunately the symptoms are still there unchanged.
Messages received on that "faulty" address are always downloaded twice but
not left on the server.
As there is only one Pop3uidl.dbx for both NTL accounts it would be rather
difficult to explain why it's contents should affect only one of these
accounts, would it not?

1: Make sure you also have Delete messages after X days checked, or your
server will get choked up eventually.

2: Duplicate messages.

For Hotmail, or IMAP accounts:

ToolsOptionsGeneral tab. Uncheck either: When starting, go directly to my
Inbox folder or, Send and receive messages at startup.

For a POP3 account, see:

Just a guess right now, but for the problem account, you may have a damaged
identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages from the old identity and
delete it.

Well, I have created a new identity and --- it seems to work there! I do not
quite understand what the damage could have been caused in the main identity
and what it means. What I will try next is to delete the accounts in the old
identity and create them afresh to see if it just will not do the same
trick. It would save me some effort.

For whatever reason, an identity can become corrupt, especially the main
default identity.
