Default XP file search and outlook address book not working

I've already googled the heck out of this, and I am aware of the security
patch issue, BUT

Customer has a computer (little old man, no spyware or virus issues)
XP, with Mcafee internet security suite installed on it, (told him to dump
that)
Outlook express address book damaged please reinstall,
and his XP search function has stopped working,

already have tried to remove and reinstall IE6 and Outlook, Outlook address
book did come back after a repair install of XP but I killed it by doing
Microsoft updates (DOH)!!
(already edited the reg as per Microsoft)

But I at least expected that the file search would come back, It never did.
I'm starting to suspect Mcafee, as at one point I went to delete the Outlook
folder only to see it reappear a few seconds later, That is a new one for me
!
( I was able to delete it in safe mode )

as a temp fix I have installed Thunderbird for his E-mail and Agent Ransack
for his file search,
which for him, he is fine with , but I feel the need to fix it right..

any ideas ?

Mich...

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.

Is MS Outlook (or MS Office) also installed?

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook (NB: no space) and is
its value set to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and
all should be well. (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and
don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.

2. If "Security Update for Windows XP (KB911567)" is found in Add/Remove

persists. Mo http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#14 (cited earlier; ignore

If still no joy, the machine may be infected with hijackware.
