I dont understand what happened to outlook express. I think it might have
something to do with an update but I cannot(dont really want to) use system restore. When I open outlook express it just freezes and makes a "ding". It locks up,and I have to use CTRL-ALT-DELETE. PLEASE HELP Thanks, Scott S. |

Start he http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#crash
General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm. - Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only). - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), AH-VSOP Scott S. wrote: I dont understand what happened to outlook express. First, find and delete Folders.dbx - With Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3 it will be a hidden file. If that doesn't fix it, Inbox.dbx may be corrupt. Don't store messages in the Inbox. It is the folder most apt to be corrupted. As soon as you read them move them to user created folders. Then compact the Inbox regularly. Find and move (not copy) Inbox.dbx to an empty Windows folder. With Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3 it will be a hidden file. You can use either of these tools to extract the messages from the old DBX file: DBXtract ($5): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/ although this tool is faster and better: DBXpress: ($25) http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx Do NOT extract to the desktop! With a large file this can take a long time, so let it keep running. The messages can be dragged from a Windows folder back into an OE folder in OE's Folder List. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP, OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com Please respond in newsgroup |
