I've just started using newsgroups. I could really use a tutorial. Does one
exist? I'd like to get the most out of the help they offer. OE6 seems to indicate in the Folder pane (by means of a value in parentheses) that the newsgroup contains several thousand messages. However, in the preview pane I only see a few hundred items (are these what are referred to as headers?). Why don't I see the several thousand? I don't know if the messages displayed are downloaded or not (and what does it mean if they are?) I haven't been able to find Help to explain what to expect if I click "Headers" on the toolbar. Is it possible (is it even practical or recommended) to display information about all messages in the preview pane? Or is the best use of a newsgroup to use "Find" and enter a search argument? Thanks, Charlie |

You can probably find a good tutorial on the internet.
Newsgroups can be a good source of information, but they do have their limitations. For one, they're not a good place to get a tutorial. Outlook Express only displays a set number of posts at a time. (You can select the amount from Tools Options Read tab). If it were to try to display all the thousands of posts on your ISP's news server, it might take a real long time to download. If you want to see more posts, go to Tools Get next X headers. Bravo to you for wanting to learn how newsgroups work and how to use them wisely. -- Ted Zieglar "Backup is a computer user's best friend." "CharlieGrimes" wrote in message ... Thanks, Charlie The blue number in the Folders pane is an estimate of the number of messages not downloaded yet. Tools | Options | Read has an option telling OE how many headers to download at a time. After reading those (or as many as you want to) Tools has an option to download another bunch. I think it's best to right click the Folder and select Catch Up. This will mark everything as read. Then I go to Tools | Options | Read and UNcheck Download ### headers at a time. Then it will download ALL new headers. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP, OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com Please respond in newsgroup |
