Kos your stapler's broken?

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application (AVG?). It provides
no additional protection, it's probably causing the problem, and even
Symantec says it's not necessary:

paste
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
/paste

Either you're reading in Plain Text and the message contains HTML, or you
are using AVG and have e-mail scanning enabled.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:

A paper clip indicates that the message has an attachment. If it
doesn't really have an attachment, a couple of things can be going on.

If you are seeing the paper clips with all messages in the message list,
the AVG version 7 set to scan e-mail can cause that. Remove the e-mail
scanning portion of AVG as it is unnecessary.

If some messages show a paper clip in the preview pane header when
viewed, but not in the message list, this can indicate an HTML message
and you have selected Tools, Options, Read, Read All messages in plain
text. In that case, this is normal. The attachments will be the HTML
version of the message plus any embedded graphics.
