In some emails I am getting the message 'some pictures have been blocked to
prevent the sender from identifying your computer' what's going on here?
Is it one of my my security settings or what that is causing this to happen?

TIA

B.W.

It is a security issue that has been around since SP2 was added to XP. When
you see that prompt, just click on it to see the pictures.

If you want to have the pictures always displayed automatically, go to Tools
| Options | Security and uncheck: "Block Images............". If you do,
and you get HTML spam, your address may be verified just by opening the
message, hence the security option.

Those are HTML mails which don't contain the pictures but links to the
"pictures" on a web server:

Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_bug.

Is it one of my my security settings

Yep. Did you look? What did you find that looks relevant to blocking
Internet (i.e., external) content?
