I have the same type of problem as Amarante, I have XP SP2 and have
uninstalled Norton Internet Security completely. Upgraded to Microsofts new Windows Defender also used Windows Live Safty Centre, no bugs. Also use Ad Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and no bugs there either. I have restated several times but still OE starts to open then the old " OE has encounted a problem and needs to close". I use Office Outlook in another account and have no problems. I use to use both OE and Outlook in one account and they both work well untill recently. Please can you advise on how to get OE up and running again. Many thanks in advance.....Gee Gee. "Jim Pickering" wrote: My suggestion would be instead to uninstall any product you have from Symantec. Norton does not play "nice" with Outlook Express and never has. It can even cause a total loss of stored messages. Its continued use is at your own risk and if you insist on using it, at least disable all email scanning with it to prevent damage to your stored messages. As should be obvious from the comments above, Symantec has no clue about how the stored messages can be damaged by the use of its products nor the problems it causes in Outlook Express. And they don't want to hear about it, since their main interest is in selling you their products. However, they will admit, albeit reluctantly, that email scanning does absolutely nothing of any redeeming value: Frequently asked questions about Norton AntiVirus Email Scanning: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02111812533106 -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. Thanks. "Amarante" wrote in message ... On returning from vacation I had two fraudulent emails purportedly from PayPal my account info. I attempted to copy the headers and forward to security at my ISP but on hitting "send" received message: "OE encountered a problem and needs to close". Clicking OK makes OE close, then a message appears: "Another program is attempting to access your address book, do you want to allow it?" I ran full virus scan with updated .dats which showed nothing. Then rebooted in Safe Mode, but Norton Antivirus would not open in Safe Mode, giving message: "Symantec Integrator encountered a problem and needs to close." An hour on the phone with Symantec Virus Support determined that I don't have a virus....at least not one known to them, I guess. Their suggestion. Un/reinstall OE 6 and Norton Internet Security. Before doing that, I thought I'd see if anyone here had similar problems or other suggestions. |

I received an MS auto update (KB 905474) and all is well
Your error message (as posted in OE General) was: QP OE has encounted a problem and needs to close AppName: msimn.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: mlang.dll /QP I'd bet that either another "auto update" resolved the problem or that the "auto update" had nothing whatsoever to do with the problem. General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm. - Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only). - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~PA Bear gee gee wrote: Thanks for your solution, I had tried this, I made OE the default but could not enter OE to make addjustment there....
