Default Cannot log on to email from either Outlook or Outlook Express

I know this has to do with the old 'Error 800 blah, blah' that we've fought
since Outlook Express began (1995? the ol' beta groups?) but I can't
remember what to do.

this started Monday, 5/29/06. When I hit "Send and Receive" my password was
rejected and so was my husband's. (2 boxes on a Verizon DSL account) I
retried various times over the next 2 days and sent a query to Verizon email
help section. On the 3rd reply they said I should call the 800 #. Spent
about an hour with a tech who tried to tell me that I was typing
incorrectly, my caps lock was on, yada, yada. She said that since I could
log on via MSIE to my Verizon home page that it had to be in the MS
software. Yeah, OK, whatever. then I remembered, dimly, that there is a way
to solve this.

but what that is, I cannot remember. I did try deleting my account and
setting it us again after a restart. I tried deleting my password in
Account/Properties. Now I'm stuck. Any & all help gratefully received.

It's probably the "yada, yada" which would have included the solution.

This symptom could be due to an improper selection of options
in Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties,...

and only your ISP will know exactly which set of options should be used.
