I'll try and make this as short as possible. OE was started and all my
messages both opened and not were gone. I checked the file location and they
were not there. It's as if they had not existed. Will system restore be able
to restore the missing messages, if not, how and where do I go about getting
them back.

Thanks

System Restore will not "bring back" any messages. It sounds like
compacting of the message store was interrupted before it could complete.
You may need a 3rd party utility to recover them, but if you are running
Windows XPSP2 with all patches installed, you may find that you have backup
copies of the missing DBX files in your Recycle Bin with an extension of
..BAK - so if that's the case, please reply and let us know.

If not, then your best hope may well be to obtain a copy of DBXpress from
www.oehelp.com and use it to recover from disk your missing messages.

I found the missing messages in the hidden files after enabling the hidden
files in the search. Now that I know where to find them can I import all the
files back to OE ? Thanks for your assistance in helping me to locate them.
The www.oehelp.com website was also very helpful

Yes. When Import asks you where to import from, check the box at the bottom
and browse to where you found them.
