Can headers and message bodies be downloaded in reverse order, most recent
first?

No, but if you want to get all the posts *including* the latest, uncheck Get
XXX headers at a time.

Yes. That's the way the Headers button (aka Get Next... command)
works. Set the Get ___ headers at a time value to something small,
like 100 and then you can get the 100 most recent first, then click the button
(or use the Tools menu item) to get the next 100 most recent, etc.

In order to get their bodies downloaded you could then mark the ones
you want downloaded (or set Watch Conversation on them) and use
the Synchronize Newsgroup command with just Get messages marked
for downloaded checked on its dialog.
