Default OE 6.x hanging up, producing dbx errors etc., need to reboot to re

Hi,
Using...
IE and OE 6.x, Win XP,
Trend Micro PC-cillin
Spybot, Spyware Blaster, Ad Aware SE,

I am having a fair amount of trouble w/OE 6, and initially thought it was
being caused by my e-mail notification program.
I uninstalled the notification program, and am still having the problems.

We have two accounts, and at different times one or the other account will
not "let go" when closed via Exit and Log Off Idenity.
Then when trying to launch OE from the Quick Launch area of the Taskbar, an
error message will come up that it was unable to initialize the Store
Directory, or, it simply won't open anything at all.
Once in a while, the 'Send a Report to Microsoft' error box will come up,
but not always.

The only remedy seems to be to reboot the system.

I have already reinstalled the OS via Dell's Symantec utility.

I have tried using a Registry cleaner (Easy Clean, or something like that),
and that hasn't helped. It doesn't appear to have hurt anything either.

As far as I can tell, all updates are in place.

Is there something that is conflicting here, or is there something that I
need to configure differently?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Clayton

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Default OE 6.x hanging up, producing errors, need reboot to remedy

Thank you, PA Bear.
I have started doing the things you mentioned, looked at the two links you
provided, and will continue the regular maintenance as suggested.

However, OE is still "hanging" on either one or the other of the Identities,
fairly frequently. When we go to Exit ( from whichever ID) it will close OE,
but NOT log-off the Identity. After a re-boot, it will work normally for " x
" amount of times, and then suddenly, it will do the same thing again.

Any further ideas (?) will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Default OE 6.x hanging up, producing errors, need reboot to remedy

1. Is the machine fully up-to-date at Windows Update?

I am having a fair amount of trouble w/OE 6, and initially thought it
was being caused by my e-mail notification program.
I uninstalled the notification program, and am still having the
problems.

2. Both identities may have been corrupted by the program (and/or Trend
Micro Anti-Spam). Replace each of them.

For each identity:

Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File Identities
Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the

old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into the new one,
and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage Identities).

Ok PA Bear,

I've created two new IDs, imported msgs., and addresses, then deleted the
old IDs. We'll see how this goes.

Thank you for your help.
