Default OE 6 Error code 0x800ccc79

I get this message when I send mail. Need to know what this error code means
and how to fix it. I don't get a message when I try to receive, I just
don't get the mail.

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by
the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'jjon . Subject
'Email problems', Account: 'mail.hughes.net', Server: 'smtp.hughes.net',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 RCPT TO:jon Doe @abd.com Relaying not
allowed - please use SMTP AUTH', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error:
550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Any help you can give me will be much appreciated
Pat Miller

See the info at this link about 550 errors:
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#550relay

It appears that Hughes.net requires authentication to use their SMTP server.
Look under Tools/Accounts - Mail for your account with Hughes and double
click it to open it. Then click the Servers tab and at the bottom of the
page for Outoing Mail there is a box to check for authentication. Make sure
your Hughes account information and password is provided in the Settings
box.

Jim thanks for the information.,
I will look into the authentication item. This was Direcway.com and they
changed their name to Hughes.net - supposedly I just needed to changed the
server name all else same - at least there was no particular instructions
given.

Hi Pat,

Are you connected to the Internet with the provider that supplied the e-mail
account? Does the mail account require authentication when sending (SMTP:
Outgoing)? It may be possible to send using the outgoing server when
connected using another provider if the account uses authentication for
sending. A workaround would be to substitute the SMTP (Outgoing) server
provided by the service you're using to connect.

If the POP3 (Incoming) configuration is correct it should be possible to
receive mail. A workaround would be to connect to Web-based e-mail, if
available.

Kuay Tim thanks a bunch for the reply. This supposedly was just a name
change for carrier. Direcway became Hughes.net - things worked good on
Direcway and I have nothing but trouble since the name change. I will check
out the Troubleshooting Guide.
Pat

PS it is interesting to me that I can send email to the Newsgroup. Guess it
is direct and smtp is not involved.

Hi Pat,

With the change there could be a period of time when there will be problems,
but it's hard to say. Only your provider would know for sure.

E-mail and news look much alike. They are actually based on two different
Internet standards. Your guess is on the mark.

Correct. News is sent via servers using the NNTP protocol. SMTP is not
involved.

Check the space in the address? 'jjon
.

J Doe is a widespread fake address, in various forms? The error means that
the server rejected the recipient address.

Hi Mac
I changed the name - did not want the actual name to appear in public. This
same message comes in no matter to whom I have addressed the correspondence.
