That's the problem. People want the computer to read the message and not
download it if it has certain characteristics, but how do you read it
without downloading it? G

I wrote a server side filter when swen came out, but that still had to
access the message contents first as well (although it was easy to filter
swen).

Because OE does not filter on HTML messages or part the HTML part of a
message. Never has. It will only look at the text part. Believe me, it's
been asked for since OE5.0, I know I asked during the beta.

What OE really needs is a filter that says "Only download messages that
satisfy the following criteria".

Technically, for POP3 connections that would be impossible.
The best it could do is use the TOP 0 command (when available)
to download and inspect only an E-mail's headers.

Supposedly what you're looking for may be more feasible using IMAP
but even then it's hard to imagine how you would be able to filter on HTML
content without first downloading it. ; )

I've seen some people claim that MailWasher can do that. They tend to
back off when I point out that, even though MW doesn't write the message
to disk (maybe; but what about the virtual swap file), it still has to
pull the message from the POP3 server and load it into memory.

There is a way to get partial information and not the entire message. So
one could download enough to figure out its pure HTML without having to
download the entire message. For instance, if one got the first 200 lines
one could probably determine much of the header info and also the message
type sufficient to provide greater filtering variables than what OE now
provides.
