I realize this has been covered and I have tried all the suggestions.
I'm using Windows XP SP2. Outlook suddenly stopped working on 7/1 but had been working fine for over a year. *Tried moving all .dbx folders to another filder, leaving Outlook Express folder empty *Tried to re-install IE6 - Won't let me do this. *Removed the update patch 911567 and re-booted *Copied the Outlook Exp. program files from a working computer and wrote over the existing files in case one was corrupt *Let System Mechanic 6 repair the registry. *MSjava.dll was missing. I copied it into the windows/system 32 dir. Have not seen if this must be installed somehow. Nothing changes. I would appreciate any help as I have run out of options. Thansk, Ron |

General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm. - Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only). - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), AH-VSOP Ron wrote: I realize this has been covered and I have tried all the suggestions. Looking at the link provided below, and my registry, I don't see any identy
for myself such as Last Username; Last UserID; Default User ID and Start As. Here is the reg. tree: Microsoft -----------Outlook Express ------5.0 (why 5.0? I'm using 6.0) -----Block Senders -----Columns -------(under Mail are 46 items. Default value = value not set. The items listed above (Last User name, etc) are not in this list. There is only one identity GUID. We have two users with separate logons and using XP Home. Questions: 1) Is the 5.0 relavent when I'm using Express 6.0? The other setting seem correct but could have been there when I used 5.0. 2) Are the missing items required? 3) Would installing IE7 beta solve the issue by installing a new OE with it? Does ;the beta contain a new Outlook Express? 4) Is it time to pay MS to solve the issue? Thanks for help. Ron PS. 1) OE 5, 5.5 and 6 all use the 5.0 registry keys. That's normal.
2) The "missing keys" should be under [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities] not under Outlook Express. 3) IE7 does not include Outlook Express 4) Besides what you have listed as trying, did you try the Forceid procedure and the deleting the OE registry entries? Additionally, as for trying to reinstall OE program files, see: How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378 -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Ron" wrote in message ... It sounds as if you have some serious corruption in your existing message
store. Questions you ask: 1. They were lazy when they upgraded from 5.0 to 6.0 and left the keys intact. 2. No. 3. IE7 does not contain any updates to OE. OE is now separate from IE and all future updates to IE will not contain any OE upgrade. OE is effectively dead, and for XP users, it will be replaced/supplemented sometime in the future with Windows Live Mail Desktop, which is now in beta. 4. Not until you review the info at this link (unless you like spending money): http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#crash -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. PS. This would be easier if we could paste screen captures into the
post. Hi Ron, I post screen shots all the time. If one is using Outlook Express and receiving this newsgroup via news.microsoft.com and does not have "Read all messages in Plain Text" checked in their Options they will view the screen shot. I will send another post with screen shot, if above is true you will see it. Some ISP's and other news readers strip and/or delete attachments, so far news.microsoft.com doesn't. After using Print Screen, pasted it into my Microsoft Word, copied it there then pasted it into this message after formatting it for Rich Text (HTML) Ken "Ken" wrote in message ... | PS. ![]() I want to thank all of you for the suggestions. However, I have spent 14 hours on trying to get one stupid Microsoft program to work because the company can't make it easy to uninstall and reinstall. The solution is simple - I won't use Outlook Express. There are other email programs out there and I encourage anyone with this problem to get one of them. Go to http://email.about.com/od/windowsemailclients/ or if you have Road Runner Internet, use the Web Mail at their site. Ron |
