Default Outlook Express deletes incoming attachments

Outlook Express seems to be deleting all attachments sent to it with
e-mail (even ones I have sent to myself and know are just simple Word
files) is there an option that I can change in OE that is doing this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi AM,

You might try unchecking "Do not allow attachments"

I have WindowsMe Outlook Express not sure where it is on Windows XP/

Outlook Express | Tools | Options | Security tab.

Tools | Options | Security tab
Uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could
potentially be a virus"

Click Apply then OK

I found a similar option but it says that it will delete attachments
that may be viruses, therefore is this not a potentialy dangerous move
and also the fact it says attachments that may be viruses and not all
attachments makes me wonder if it should therefore be allowing simple
word files through OK as is as how could it think they may be viruses
unless this option really means stop all attahments and if so why
doesn't ti say this?

So basically you don't scan any attachments for viruses when getting them,
even from trusted sources?

That is not a good practice.

What this option does is to keep you from opening something by accident. It
does cause you to go to extra steps to be able to save it but you can decide
which is better:

1) Willy nilly opening any attachment then find out you totally screwed up
then taking it to BestBuy or Staples or wherever and getting a charge that
begins at $125 for fixing the mess up you created.

2) Better safe than sorry. Still got the $125 in your pocket and having to
make a few extra mouse clicks (which take so much energy according to some).

Hi Am,

Have you tried unchecking, Do not allow attachments"?

Does your simple Word attachment you sent to yourself arrive?

Ken
PS: virus protection is a different topic.

The only option I can find in MS Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1123 says:

"Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially
be a virus."

Nothing about deleting attachments. AFAIK, you _can't_ delete an
attachment with MSOE without jumping through a few hoops. Email is
simply a text file with some RFC 2822, and other RFC, formatting. The
attachment is not "attached" in any normal sense of that word, it is
just a distinct part of the whole.

What that option does is to prevent manipulating file section of the
message. You can neither be save the file to disk, nor open the file
with a file handler, when that option is checked. The files are still in
the message, they are just inaccessible. Disabling the option will allow
access to the file. Go ahead, give it a shot. Clear the check, look at
the file. Then restore the check. Every time you check the option, MSOE
will _BLOCK ACCESS_ to the file. Nothing more, nothing less; just block
access.
