All of a sudden my Outlook Express can't send messages. I didn't
intentionally change any settings. I use OE 6 with AOL (IMAP, not POP3). I have discovered that if I turn OFF my firewall (Kerio Personal 2.1.5), the outgoing message goes through. This has only started happening in the last 24 hours. I get the Socket Error 10053 and other error number 0x800CCC0F. Googling that points me to my AV (AVG), but turning Kerio on and off seems to be what gets results. Turning AVG on and off doesn't seem to make a difference. (And AVG is NOT set to scan outgoing messages!) I have Outlook Express configured in KPF to any protocol, any port, any direction... System Restore hasn't helped, either. What's gigging? |

"Of course I tried soapy water!"
Yeah, I had read those articles previously and had done everything EXCEPT uninstalling and reinstalling OE. I have used this machine with OE and AOL for years, and with AVG and KPF for about six months, with no problem. Until last night! And as far as I know, I changed nothing. Perhaps I will uninstall and reinstall KPF... Thanks. That turning off the firewall fixes the problem, suggests that it is
blocking the SMTP port 587 that AOL uses. Try enabling that port to any program in the firewall. If that works, then the firewall thinks that some other program is trying to do the send. I don't know if its logs will show what. Possibly some remnant of AVG is passing the outgoing messages even though it isn't trying to scan them. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "RJB" wrote in message ... Thanks for that.
I can't quite figure out how to do that, though. It seems there is nothing in my firewall logs, and I can't see where it will let me release an entire port with carte blanche... It seems to be application-specific. Anyone with KPF advice would be appreciated. I should also add that I use OE with a POP account on it as well... And it
still sends the POP messages, then times out on the IMAPs. Both RECEIVE OK. (Because I was thinking I'd just force KPF to overlay onto port 587 instead of "any" port... But then that would jam up the POP.) I also have removed all traces of AVG from KPF's filtering rules, to no avail. "RJB" wrote: Thanks for that. I can't quite figure out how to do that, though. The POP account is likely using port 25 for sending which is why that
isn't affected. I don't know how you can get your firewall to allow port 587. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "RJB" wrote in message ... The OP first of all needs to make sure the host allows port 587.

The OP is having the problem with AOL which specifies the use of 587 for
SMTP. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Tom Willett" wrote in message ... The OP first of all needs to make sure the host allows port 587. So the problem went away - on its own, I think - for a little while.
Then it came back. So I removed Kerio Firewall and installed Zone Alarm. So far so good. We'll see! Thanks all for the attempts! |
