This glitch I'm about to explain is probably more of a Firefox issue
than anything to do with Outlook Express. However, I've already posted my problem on the Mozilla NG and the MozillaZine Forum. I got a few responses, but they didn't resolve the issue. So I thought I'd try one more place. My system: Dell desktop, Windows XP Home SP2, DSL connection. Outlook Express 6 SP2 is my email and newsgroup program, and Firefox 1.5.0.4 is my web browser. My computer is brand new, and by accident today I discovered a strange glitch. Here is one way I can replicate it: 1) Firefox is launched 2) I go to Google.com (or Yahoo.com) and click Images 3) I type in some keywords and click Search 4) Several photos are displayed corresponding to my search terms. I click on one of them, launching the web site. 5) I right-click on the page, scroll down and select Send Link. This is where Firefox crashes. "Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This happens at every website when I reach this point. One thing I would like to stress: If I visit a website directly, and right-click Send Link, there is no problem. Outlook Express launches as usual, and the hyperlink is automatically inserted. It's only when I'm visiting a website via Google's or Yahoo's Image search engines. I never had this problem with my previous desktop PC, or any other computer I can remember. I have tried the steps below to resolve the issue, but none have helped: 1) Uninstalled/reinstalled the Yahoo Images and Google Images search engines for Firefox 2) Uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox 3) Cleaned out the FF cache and cookies 4) Launched FF in safe mode and then tried the Send Link option 5) Made Thunderbird my default email program 6) Created a new FF profile 7) Went into MSCONFIG, and removed checkmarks from all the programs listed, and rebooted. Then launched FF and tried the Send Link feature 8) Used a Dell program called PC Restore to restore my system to the factory default settings, essentially formatting the hard drive. After the format, I went to Microsoft Updates and downloaded/installed all the critical patches. Then I downloaded/installed Firefox to see if the problem would happen again. To my great annoyance, it did. This last step convinced me the glitch was caused by some software/hardware conflict on my PC, and nothing that I did. Here is what Dr. Watson reports on this crash: Application exception occurred: App: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe (pid=1124) When: 7/22/2006 @ 16:41:33.890 Exception number: c0000005 (access violation) *---- System Information ----* Computer Name: *************** User Name: *************** Terminal Session Id: 0 Number of Processors: 2 Processor Type: x86 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 4 Windows Version: 5.1 Current Build: 2600 Service Pack: 2 Current Type: Multiprocessor Free Registered Organization: Registered Owner: ************ *---- Task List ----* 0 System Process 4 System 544 smss.exe 592 csrss.exe 620 winlogon.exe 664 services.exe 676 lsass.exe 860 Ati2evxx.exe 876 svchost.exe 972 svchost.exe 1072 svchost.exe 1168 svchost.exe 1268 svchost.exe 1460 spoolsv.exe 1680 Explorer.EXE 1780 stsystra.exe 1796 DMXLauncher.exe 1856 CTSysVol.exe 1864 Rundll32.exe 1884 issch.exe 1892 DLACTRLW.EXE 1900 GoogleDesktop.exe 1912 clclean.0001 1972 GoogleDesktopIndex.exe 1980 jusched.exe 2036 ashDisp.exe 116 CTDetect.exe 128 DSAgnt.exe 140 Weather.exe 148 DLG.exe 360 aswUpdSv.exe 372 ashServ.exe 388 CTsvcCDA.exe 528 svchost.exe 1140 wdfmgr.exe 2176 CreativeLicensing.exe 2444 ashMaiSv.exe 2488 ashWebSv.exe 2768 alg.exe 1928 msimn.exe 1124 firefox.exe 1052 drwtsn32.exe |
