Default Need help accessing Yahoo Canada account

I would like to configure Outlook Express so that I can use it to read,
reply and create emails for my Yahoo Canada account but I'm having some
problems.

I get this error message when I check my mail:

Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account:
'Yahoo Canada', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

This is my current configuration from the Servers tab of the Mail account
properties. I'm using square brackets with an 'X' in them to denote a
checkbox, e.g. [x]. I'm using round brackets with nothing between them to
indicate a radio button that hasn't been selected, e.g. (). I'm using round
brackets with an 'o' in them to indicate a radio button that has been
selected, e.g. (o).

Server Information
------------------
My incoming mail server is a POP3 server.
Incoming mail (POP3): pop.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.com

Incoming Mail Server
--------------------
Account name: rhino_yahoo
Password: ******
[x] Remember password
[x] Log on using Secure Password Authentication

Outgoing Mail Server
--------------------
[x] My server requires authentication
Settings button:
(o) Use same settings as my incoming mail server
() Log on using [GREYED OUT]

1. Do I have the right values under Server Information? I'm not sure if the
values I found are for Canada, the US, or both.

2. In Account Name, should I have "rhino_yahoo" or ?

3. Should I check the box that says "Log on using Secure Password
Authentication"?

4. Should I check the box that says "My server requires authentication"?

I've tried several different variations on the values shown in this note but
all of them lead to errors of some kind, although not necessarily the one
shown here.

I'd really appreciate your help in fixing these settings.

If changing the above doesn't work, you will need to access your Yahoo
account using a browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox and activate
POP access there or it will never work. You'll also find detailed
instructions on how to set up POP access there as well.

That said, I am not sure if yahoo.ca can be accessed via Outlook Express
without paying or not. The web interface will tell you that as well.

First of all, thank you for responding so quickly. I was hoping for a quick
resolution to this problem because it has been bugging me for a couple of
days now.

I made the settings changes you recommended but now I'm getting a different
error. When I click on Send/Receive to check my mail, I get a dialog
entitled "Logon - Yahoo Canada" which appears to be verifying my user name
and password. Both values are already populated: the user name is
rhino_yahoo (without any @yahoo.ca at the end) and the password is the right
number of characters although I obviously can't tell if it contains the
right values. The Remember Password checkbox is greyed out.

Just to be sure, I retyped the password and clicked OK. This results in the
dialog being displayed again and the following error message is generated:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was
rejected. Account: 'Yahoo Canada', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.ca', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Error logging in. Please visit
http://mail.yahoo.com', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error:
0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

I tried adding @yahoo.ca to the user name and clicking OK but got the same
error message.

When I got to
http://mail.yahoo.com, it takes me immediately to my Yahoo
inbox via the web interface - which seems magical to me since the URL
contains no information about my username or password! - but this is not
really what I want: I'm trying to get this mail to come to Outlook Express.
If I wanted it to read it in the web interface, I would read it there.

For what it's worth, I checked the Yahoo account via the web interface and
POP access is enabled on my account and is free.

Any idea how I can coax Outlook Express to work without getting these error
messages?

Could be a server error then. My yahoo.es account works just fine. Maybe
if you go back to the web interface and check the POP instructions
there, there is something neither you nor I have thought of. You also
might want to try to activate it on the web interface again.

Do you have any other accounts in Outlook Express and do they work? Are
you sure your firewall isn't blocking Outlook Express?

Yahoo.com discontinued pop mail service for free accounts several years
ago. I
believe Canada followed suit. This was about the same time that Hotmail
did the
same thing, but only for new accounts. Hotmail grandfathered older ones.

I'm not so sure that Canada has the same policy. I can go to a page that
gives me the POP configurations and tells me specifically what settings I
need so that I can get my email at both the web page and in Outlook Express.

This was about the same time that Hotmail did the
same thing, but only for new accounts. Hotmail grandfathered older ones.
Have a look here;
http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question...4222748AAvO7TU

That website is not exactly the most credible one on the subject of Yahoo -
or anything else for that matter. Any can answer any question and be
completely wrong; these are not official answers from Yahoo.

Is your yahoo.ca account part of your Sympatico service?

If not, you'll have to subscribe to Yahoo Delivers! to be able to access the account in OE. See http://help.yahoo.com/help/ca/mail/pop/pop-02.html and http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-06.html (info is correct for OE6).

Two items, to briefly recap this thread:

Free Yahoo! email accounts (with the exception of yahoo.com) require a
subscription to Yahoo! Delivers. I had to do this with yahoo.com before
they changed to fee-based access only. I had to do this with my
yahoo.co.jp account. Pretty sure that is common to all remaining free
Yahoo! Mail accounts.

Secure Password Authentication is almost never used, outside of MS
Exchange systems. Yahoo! certainly does not require it.
