When I receive an email with an attachment I no longer see a paperclip as
with earlier versions of OE and I have no problems opening attachments. However some of my friends still see a paperclip and have problems opening attachments. Is this an older build of OE 6 (this is the version they are running) or some setting or other they have on their computers. Help on how to fix this please. TIA B.W. |

Are you missing the paper clip in the list of messages or the preview
pane? If the list of messages, make sure that in View, Columns the Attachment column is included. If it is, you might try making it a bit wider in case it accidentally got shrunk to small to show the paperclip. If you aren't seeing it in the preview pane, you need to select a Mail folder, then View, Layout, Preview Pane, Show Preview Pane Header in order to see the paper clip for attachments. If you select a News folder, then do the above, that applies to news messages instead. I don't know if the friend has the Preview pane open or not, I will check
that out with them. Because I never have my preview pane activated I didn't think of it. I haven't seen their set-up I just got a call saying they could not open a Word doc I had sent and they said when they click on the paperclip the attachment doesn't open. Shouldn't they still be able to open or save the attachment with the preview pane open or not anyway? I got them to check if they had 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus' cleared, which they had. I will print out How the Attachment Manager works and see if I can understand it. I'll have to get more details from my friend. Sorry Steve I didn't realise I should have sent an answer to one of my previous messages I think possibly I didn't understand the answer. I always put Thanks In Advance on my queries as I understood Newsgroup etiquette preferred people not to send additional threads as this only clogs and slows down the Internet more, that's why I usually put TIA. I do realise it must be a thankless task for you experts on these newsgroups and I guess you like to know if the suggestions actually solve the problems, sorry if I seemed rude, it really was not intended, what would we mere mortals do without you people? I was addressing 2 issues. First you mention that you don't see the
paper clip any more. That's what I was talking about regarding the message list and the preview pane. I was trying to determine where the paper clip is missing for you. Since you don't use the preview pane, that wouldn't be the problem one. The preview pane isn't needed to open attachments. The second part regarding security settings was for your friend's problem. IF they haven't got the do not allow setting checked, then the question arises are they getting any error message when they try to open or save the attachment? -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "B.W." Thanks Michael. To re-cap what happens is that my friend phones me saying
she can't open a Word doc I have sent her, which by the way is a doc other friends have no problems opening and then she goes on to describe what they are seeing in their OE layout. I'm happy with my layout and have no problems and as I don't have preview pane open anyway I had forgotten that's where you see the paperclip. So I understand that if they have the preview pane open they see a paperclip. Then to go on to why they can't open a Word doc. Looking at the information you pointed me to, Word doc doesn't appear to be one of the formats that the Attachment Manager in service pack 2 seems to consider a risk. More things I will have to check out with my friend is have they got SP2 on their PC, what Security zones they have selected and what if any error messages occur. So I have a bit more to find out. Also see if they can open the file anyway with properties, general tab, unblock. Sorry to be so dim, hope my understanding of the attachment manager is on the right track now but I will need to re-read that info a few times. What exactly happens when they try to open a Word doc? Are they getting
any error message? Does anything happen? If they try to open an attachment that OE has blocked access to via the Preview Pane paper clip, the file name will be faded (light gray) rather than normal black. In that case, clicking does nothing. If it's the normal black text, something should happen if the click on the file name, such as a Save or Open dialog or some error message. An alternate thing they can try is using File, Save Attachments to save the DOC file. Or double click the message to open in its own windows. In that case the attachment list appears at the top with the headers. They can then double click the file name there to open or right click to get some options. If the attachments are being blocked there will be a warning message to that effect by the attachments. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "B.W." Hi! Michael. After I read this thread, I have the same problem of the
paperclip icon disappears on the preview pane despite of the fact that the Show Preview Pane Header has been selected. If I de-select the Preview Pane and open the messsage, I can see the attachment is there. How can I get the paperclip icon back? This happen after I upgrade my XP home to XP prof (both are SP2).
