I am running OE6 under Win2000Pro, with all of the latest updates installed.
I get lots of spam emails sent to a small set of TO: or CC: addresses at earthlink, so I have created a series of rules attempting to control the junk, but the main rule doesn't seem to be working. Here it is, in a clip from the actual rule display in OE6: Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the To or CC line contains ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' or ' Delete it and Stop processing more rules Individual messages are always downloaded and then deleted from the earthlink server, so I simply want to delete them from my own OE6 client as soon as they are downloaded when they contain any of these junk email addresses. Is there perhaps a limit to the number of "or" entries in a rule that keeps the rule from executing. I suppose I could have fewer entries in each of several rules, but what is the actual limit if there is one. Norman G. Litell |

You can have 4096 entries in Message Rules and Blocked Senders combined, so
that is not your problem. The way you have it set up: Delete It & Stop processing more rules, does not delete it from the server, but sends the mail to your Deleted Items folder. Review these links and remember that rules have to be in a logical order. I am not sure why it isn't working. Have you tried moving the rule to the
top of the list of rules? Do that and test it by adding your address to the rule. Send yourself a message and see what happens. If it goes to the Deleted Items folder, than that was it. Remove your address from the rule. If it doesn't solve it, do other rules work OK? The Rules key in the registry can often become corrupt. This would involve rebuilding all your rules from scratch so you would only want to do that as a last resort. Another rule you could try is to block all messages from Earthlink except your own, and anyone else in your Address Book using Earthlink. You need two message rules and the first one must be above the second. They should be the first rules after all your Delete it from server rules. Rule 1: Box 1: Where the from line contains people Box 2: Stop processing more rules Box 3: Click on Contains people and Add the addresses you want to receive one-at-a time. Rule 2: (right below rule 1). Where the from line contains people Delete it and Stop processing more rules (or Delete it from the server) Click on Contains People and Add the domain @earthlink.net -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Norman Litell" wrote in message ink.net... Interesting point -- however, not being a spammer or fraudster, I don't know
how to disguise my real email address when using OE6 to read and post to these newsgroups. Can you give us a hint? "PA Bear" wrote in message ... Still trying several things you suggested in your most recent reply (e.g.,
moving the problem rule to the top of the list), and not working yet. Some clarifications: I am not using Rules to delete email from the server. Instead, under Tools Accounts Mail Properties Advanced I have unchecked the box which says "Leave mail on server" This is the way it was originally set up and has always worked. Not clear what you mean by 4096 "entries" available; what is an "entry"? For example, does the one rule I quoted which has over 50 address in the "or" list constitute one entry or 50+ entries? Do you have more than one computer? Are you using more than one identity? I
don't know what Leaving a copy of messages on the server would benefit you. If you have 5 message rules with 100 addresses, that is 500 entries. 4096 - 500 = 3596 available. Did you try the Domain rule with exceptions? I have no other answer as to why your rules aren't working except to delete the Rule Key in the registry and start over, provided you have read this first: Message Rules not working?: http://www.tomsterdam.com/insideoe/faqs/why.htm#rules If you want to try a clean registry key for rules, then: With OE closed, go to Start | Run and type in: regedit and navigate to this key: |--HKEY_CURRENT_USER |-----Identities |--------{GUID} |-----------Software |--------------Microsoft |-----------------Outlook Express |--------------------5.0 where GUID is the Global Unique IDentifier for your Identity. Under that key, you will find the following sub-keys, among others: |-----------------------Block Senders |-----------------------Rules |-----------------------Signatures Select the Rules Key and delete it. This will remove *all* the rules. Reboot and rebuild your rules. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Norman Litell" wrote in message ink.net...
