Only the mother board died on the old machine. I now have a new
laptop, and I have the old hard drive attched to the new machine as a USB drive. I am unable to run Outlook Express from the old drive, but I do have all the old files. How would I go about transfering all the old files over to the new machine? TIA, Casey |

Basically, copy them to the HDD | Remove the Read Only attribute and then
from OE: File | Import | Messages. Choose MSOE 6 and check the box to Import from a Store Directory and point to where they are saved. Note that an import won't work if Folders.dbx was not included. See this for more detailed information. Backup & Resto http://www.insideoe.com/backup/ -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Casey" wrote in message ups.com... Thanks for your help.
BRUCE: Basically, copy them to the HDD CASEY: By "them" I'm guessing you mean all the files in E:\Program Files\Outlook Express? (E is the USB drive which is the old hard drive from the dead laptop.) I copied all of the files in that directory to a new folder on my desktop. BRUCE: Remove the Read Only attribute CASEY: ??? On the 10 files that were copied over, I right clicked on all of them and none are set to Read Only. Is there something else I need to do? BUCE: and then from OE: File | Import | Messages. Choose MSOE 6 and check the box to Import from a Store Directory and point to where they are saved. Note that an import won't work if Folders.dbx was not included. CASEY: I got an error that says "No messages can be found in this folder..." I'm guessing it's because Folders.dbx was not included? What is that? How do I include it? BRUCE: See this for more detailed information... http://www.insideoe.com/backup/ CASEY: I'm seeing lots abotut how to backup OE, but very little on restoring. And seeing as how I never backed it up (shame on me), well then, what would I restore from? Thanks for your help!!! Casey |

You can only include it if you can get back to the original message store and recopy the entire message store and not just selected dbx files. BRUCE: See this for more detailed information... http://www.insideoe.com/backup/ CASEY: I'm seeing lots abotut how to backup OE, but very little on restoring. And seeing as how I never backed it up (shame on me), well then, what would I restore from? Do you now have some dbx files from the old drive stored on your new drive? If you do, you can get them into OE manually. You may have to rename the files if they have the same name as folders on your new drive that is the same in order to avoid an overwrite. You will have to do this for each folder/dbxfile you have saved. Copy the dbx file from the CD to your Desktop. Right click on it and remove the Read only attribute and rename it. Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as the one on your desktop. Open the new folder and then close OE. Go to Windows Explorer and Click Desktop and drag the file from the Desktop to the OE store folder, (do not open it), that contains the .dbx files. Prompt - "Do you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ Thanks for your help!!! Casey |

It sounds like everything depends on getting these .dbx files off the
old drive. How do I do this? I did a search on that drive for .dbx and it came up empty. Am I out of luck? Casey |

Windows version? [To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you
include all of previous message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup.] In WinXP, Win2K and Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start Control Panel Folder Options View. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org Casey wrote: It sounds like everything depends on getting these .dbx files off the old drive. Include Hidden Files and Folders in your search.
Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then StartRunCtrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. Both the old laptop which died and my new one are XP Pro.
I am not able to execute the old version of OE. The motherboard died on my old laptop, but the hard drve is fine. I took the drive out of the old laptop and it is now a USB drive on my new laptop. So, going to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder on the old version of OE is not an option. However, I can do this on the new version and it might be a clue as where to look on the old drive. I'll be back. Bruce Hagen wrote: Include Hidden Files and Folders in your search. OKAY!!! All of my previous folders are now in place, along with the
messages that were in them. Now, how do I tackle accounts and the address book? Thank you so much for the help!!! Casey Casey wrote: Both the old laptop which died and my new one are XP Pro.
