On my other machine I'm running W2K with OutlookExpress. My email access
works fine but no matter what I do I can't get news. I get error 480 - news server requires authentication. HOWEVER - I'm using the same news server on this system running XP and have no problem getting in without any authentication. ISP is no help - their support person hasn't a clue. Obviously it's some setting in W2K that needs to be changed. Anyone know which one? |

Obviously we need more information on how the computers are connected. |

If you've filled out the rest of the newsgroup account, try just putting a check mark at "This server require Authentication". NOT secure; Authentication. Otherwise, give more details on which group, etc. so it's clearer what you have to do. Pop |

Compare your settings at Tools, Accounts, News, Properties, Servers.
If the settings there are identical, a possible cause of problems is that the PC connect via different ISPs. Some ISPs require that in order to use their news server you must either connect via that ISP or provide your ISP logon info for the newsgroup. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Dogburt" wrote in message ... Sorry - both systems use dialup. And it fails when OE tries to download the
list of newsgroups. I've tried the "this server requires authentication" checked and unchecked. Also have tried putting in my userid/password for the ISP and that doesn't help. I can dialup and use IE, ftp, OutlookExpress for email and any other random IP enabled software I have. Just no newsserver access. The news server is my local ISP's news server. I had a W2K system that could access news but it blew up so I have no way of checking it's settings. "Dogburt" wrote in message ... On my other machine I'm running W2K with OutlookExpress. ![]() "antioch" wrote in message ... Is this any help? http://newsgroups.news.prodigy.com/480.html Antioch Dogburt Sorry - gave you the wrong link - don't think it will help that much. Also found others - but do not remember if they helped or not. I had same problem about two years ago with a system running 2000 and I was on dialup. Nearly every week I had problems and nearly every time I went through a process of cancelling email account and addresses and resetting them all over again. But then I had a very helpful ISP with whom each reset was done by phone. I cant believe I still had them in favourites - and I see there have been a few updates on one site, so..... http://www.mcse.ms/archive170-2004-9-1110863.html http://pages.prodigy.net/bobhenry/OEhelp.htm I have been onto each site to make sure I have picked the right ones. Good luck - but I have a feeling that this will only get resolved with ISP contact. Rgds Antioch |
