Default OE acting funky??

The other day I started getting an error when downloading from my hosting
company's server..
I check, and I suddenly have 2 'accounts' listed in OE for bellsouth.
1 is trying to use a dialer, the other is set correctly to use the local
network.
Here's the funny things:
1. it'll get to about 39 messages downloaded, and THEN it'll suddenly have
a problem.
2. If I try to change the 1 account and correct it, it'll change itself
back!
3. If I DELETE the account, when I check 'accounts' again, it's still
there.

HELP! I can't get rid of it!

Did you recently install any BellSouth software or updates for BellSouth
software already installed?

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File
Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into
the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update,
installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss
in the futu
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3

This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook
Express/WinXP SP2.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Worked nearly perfectly. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
As frustrating as it is, thanks as well for the advise on how to help
prevent it.
MS should be able to prevent stupid stuff like that, but again, thanks
for the tips.

MSOE was never intended for heavy use, and is over four years old.
Nearly as I can tell, development has stopped, and it is going to die
with Win9x. The replacement is already in Beta; "Windows Mail", I
believe.

Four years old? C'mon, now, Norman...

Nearly as I can tell, development has stopped, and it is going to die
with Win9x

wink How about that? I'm running WinXP SP2 and it has OE...and I know
users of Win2K, WinNT and Win2K03 who have it so I guess we all must've
missed something.

Some may consider Windows Live Mail *Desktop* to be a downloadable
replacement for OE, but it isn't. The default Mail Client in Windows Vista
is Windows Mail, yes, but it won't be available for other OSS.
