Getting an error in outlook express when connecting to POP servers of my isp.
An Unknown TCP/IP error occurred 0x800CCC40 This error seems to relate to Winsock. Have reset the tcp/ip stack using the netsh int ip reset command and also reset the winsock and winsock 2 registry entries using winsockxpfix Anyone any other ideas? |

The full text of the error message would be helpful. That includes the
server name, server type, port number, socket error code, SSL, etc. For best results, copy/paste the error message rather than retyping it. You should be able to highlight the message text in the error window (hold down the left mouse button while dragging the mouse over the text). Then press Ctrl-C (hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the C key) to copy the highlighted text to the Windows clipboard. You can then paste that text into the problem description using the Ctrl-V key combination. If you have your anti-virus set to scan e-mail as it downloads, or an anti-spam program, either of those could be causing the problem. This could also be your firewall incorrectly blocking Outlook Express or the mail ports (typically 110 for receiving and 25 for sending). 0x800CCC40 WINSOCK_WSASYSNOTREADY Network subsystem is unusable.
Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP2)? Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one? Can you send from this account? Has this account ever worked in OE? Are you having connection problems with Internet Explorer as well? How do you connect (e.g., dial-up, DSL, cable, satellite)? Is a router involved? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org Andrew wrote: An unknown TCP/IP error occurred. Windows xp SP2
Sudden problem. Cant send or receive from any accounts within OE. Accounts have worked previously. Actually cleared all accounts and reset up just one pop acccount for now to test. All other internet appllications working fine. Connect through dsl modem. no firewall enabled Email account details correct. Webmail works fine. Seems OE is not binded to the tcp protocol as instantly the minute you click send receive. no info is transmitted via any tcp port.(run a tcp port monitor) Reinstalled tcp/ip, and reinstated winsock. Still nothing. "PA Bear" wrote: 0x800CCC40 WINSOCK_WSASYSNOTREADY Network subsystem is unusable. Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP2)? Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one? Start Run (type in) CMD [OK]
In the Command window, carefully type the following: netsh winsock reset Hit [ENTER], close the Command window and reboot the machine. General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place. - WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update, installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss in the futu http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3 This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook Express/WinXP SP2. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org Andrew wrote: Windows xp SP2 Sudden problem. I regularly get this on one of my accounts. Go to Tools, then Accounts. Select the account and click Properties, then Server . You will find that the server has changed to 127.0.1. Change this to your POP3 server eg poptiscali.co.uk, then click Apply. This should clear it. If anybody has any idea why this should keep changing, I'd be glad to hear it. |

I'm guessing you changed the server name in the error message since
'pop.xxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx.com' is not a valid server name. There's no reason to mask a server name when posting error messages since there is nothing sensitive about it. And having the correct server name helps use diagnose problems. Try using Telnet to access the POP3 mail server. If that fails with a similar error, then the problem isn't in OE. You can find these Telnet instructions at http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_san...pop3telnet.htm -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Andrew" wrote in message ... Hope somone comes up with an answer for ya. I have the identical problem. I
think I might have spiked something with HijackThis chasing a virus. I have two computers sitting side by side with identical OE setups. Works great on one, just like yours on the other with, of course, the exception that it refers to my ISPs.
