Default A Major Problem - IE - OE - Outlook - MS Exchange

Please excuse if this is in the wrong location. I admit shotgunning this as
do not know which newsgroup to post this to

I have a problem with either IE, OE, Outlook, or MS Exchange and I am not
sure what the problem is

Running XP Pro SP1 with half gig mem

Outlook 2002 (10.4219.4219) SP 2 is on machine but I do not use it. I was
going over it to try in get some information
for a friend

Outlook Express 6 (6.00.2800.11223) which I use for mail and newsgroups

Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 XPSP2 which is my default browser

The problem:

Initially when I used IE and wanted to send a URL I Would hit: Files Send
Link by Email. An Outlook Express email page would come up with the URL in

place. I could
enter a few words of wisdom and then send it off

Now when I do that, instead of an Outlook Express page coming up I get a
little window that says "Choose Profile". In the little window is the word
"Outlook". If I: (A)
use OK then what appears to be an email window opens with the URL in it.
Hitting the HELP button on that
window "M/S Exchange comes up and states it is version 4.0.994.0. (B) use
"NEW" button to the right of
the window, widow comes up with a select option (grayed out) and the only
selection is Manually Configure.
Next window states to enter profile name (provide new profile name) and
windows comes up with error message "DLL
is damaged or could not be found"

I have gone into Outlook and turned off the "Make default email browser".
When I do into options for OE, I set OE to be the defaults in both email and
newsgroups. The newsgroups will
take, the setting default email will not.

When I go into options for IE, there is nothing in the window for email,
there is nothing available to be selected and I cannot add anything.

Would like to get my original OE default back. I do not have a clue as to
how to do it. On the Control Widow when the Mail ICON is selected, it comes
up for Outlook.

Would appreciate any help and somewhat detailed instructions.

Again I apologize. I'm kind of up against a wall and I would like to get OE
back working with IE when I want to send a web page or a link

Thank You

Go to StartRun and type the following:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg

(Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure that it is correct)

Make certain to include the quotations marks and the space between the
ending quotation mark and the slash. If the path is correct, just copy/paste
the line above into the StartRun line.

Then open Internet Explorer and go to ToolsInternet OptionsPrograms and
set OE as the default mail (and news) program.

Regarding the links, look at this KB article for a registry edit that may be
of help:

Default A Major Problem - IE - OE - Outlook - MS Exchange

Appreciate the help. The first fix resolved the problem of setting OE to be
the default. Still have the Exchange/Outlook problem. Followed the article
you sent me via URL and it worked. Registry Edit is not my cup of tea but I
managed to fat finger it.

Do not know how that happened. As I said, I was roaming through Outlook and
I must have roamed too far.

Thank You for the assistance

Thanks for the feedback, you probably did not cause it? MS Outlook provides
an update to its junk mail filter via auto updates each month, and it steals
itself the default mail setting.

BTW, in future if you wish to post the same message to multiple newsgroups
please cross post by adding the groups in the newsgroups line of the new
post.
