is there any easy way to protect against junk mail, rather than blocking
efforts? thanks

No, there is no easy way to protect against junk mail, and the hard ways
don't always work.

1: Never post to a newsgroup or forum using your real address. It is one of
a few places spammers harvest addresses from.

First check with your ISP and see if they provide this service - some are
doing this now - some are free.
If they do, then confirm that they can stop .gif type spam. No message
rules to syop them - well not simple rules.
